The event series Nepantla Library is a project by Verena Melgarejo Weinandt and District * School without a Center in cooperation with the sonntagsbureau in the Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek Berlin and Zaglossus publishing.

From September 2019 to June 2020 monthly events in the Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek (AGB) will accompany the long overdue translation of the book Borderlands/La Frontera. The New Mestiza (1987) by Gloria E. Anzaldúa* into German. This series is an invitation to experience the process of translation through different perspectives and practices.

To this end, we will invite artists, activists, and theoreticians to present their work and relate it to Anzaldúa. Anzaldúa’s creation and writing includes poetry, short stories, theoretical treatises, letters, and children’s books. These texts were nourished by experience and everyday knowledge, her spiritual practice, scientific references, and the body as a place from which knowledge can be produced.

The event series Nepantla Library refers to the term “Nepantla,” which Anzaldúa uses to denote a social embeddedness in between. This in between refers not only to national borders, but to an existence between and with different languages, cultures, practices, and forms of knowledge. “Nepantla” describes an in-between state – a place of contradictions, connections, and transformations.

The series in the AGB is an open invitation to accompany the process of translation through monthly events for one year. Together we ask: which knowledge, which voices, which forms of knowledge production can be understood differently or even better today with and through Anzaldúa in the German and multilingual area? We will analyze the knowledge of the body, poetry as an articulation of resistance, empowering children’s and young adult literature, and the translation of lived experience into art, in order to experience together what (un-)learning can look like.

*GLORIA E. ANZALDÚA (1942 – 2004) was a self-proclaimed “Chicana, tejana, from the working class, dyke feminist poet, author-theorist.” She was a writer and theorist who grew up in the border area between the USA and Mexico. Her writing reflects her various experiences of marginalization, overcoming and expanding existing definitions and limitations of how we understand identities, and how we can draw strength and knowledge from these experiences. The anthology published with Cherríe Moraga, “This Bridge Called My Back. Writings by Radical Women of Color” (1981) is a fundamental work for a genealogy of the struggles and representations of women of color in the USA that conceptualized queerness intersectionally long before it became a subject of research at universities.

Desde septiembre de 2019 hasta junio de 2020 estos eventos mensuales que tienen lugar en la Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek (AGB) acompañan la tan esperada traducción del libro Borderlands/La Frontera. La nueva mestiza (1987) de Gloria E. Anzaldúa* al alemán. Esta serie es una invitación a experimentar el proceso de traducción a través de diferentes perspectivas y prácticas.

Para ello, invitamos a artistas, activistas y teóriques a presentar sus trabajos en relación con Anzaldúa. La obra de Anzaldúa incluye poesía, cuentos, tratados teóricos, cartas y libros infantiles. Estos textos se de sus experiencias cotidianas, de su práctica espiritual, de referencias científicas y del propio cuerpo como lugar desde donde es posible producir conocimiento.

Biblioteca Nepantla se refiere al término “Nepantla” que Anzaldúa utiliza para nombrar el estado de estar entre. Este estar entre se refiere no sólo a las fronteras nacionales, sino a una existencia entre y con diferentes lenguas, culturas, prácticas y formas de conocimiento. “Nepantla” describe un estado intermedio – un lugar de contradicciones, conexiones y transformaciones.

La serie en la AGB es una invitación abierta para acompañar el proceso de traducción a través de eventos mensuales en el transcurso un año, durante el cual nos preguntaremos: ¿Qué conocimientos, qué voces, qué formas de producción de conocimientos se pueden entender de forma diferente o incluso mejor hoy en día con y a través de Anzaldúa en los espacios de lengua alemana y plurilingüe? Nos ocuparemos del conocimiento del cuerpo, de la poesía como articulación de la resistencia, del empoderamiento de la literatura infantil y juvenil, y de la transferencia de la experiencia vivida al arte – con el fin de experimentar juntes diferentes maneras de (des) aprender.

*GLORIA E. ANZALDÚA (1942 – 2004) se autoproclamó „Chicana, tejana, de la clase obrera, poeta lesbiana feminista, autora teórica “. Fue una escritora y teórica que creció en la zona fronteriza entre los Estados Unidos y México. Su escritura es una expresión de sus diversas experiencias de marginación, que supera y amplía las definiciones y limitaciones existentes de cómo entendemos las identidades y cómo podemos sacar fuerza y conocimiento de estas experiencias. El volumen de This Bridge Called My Back. Writings by Radical Women of Color (1981), publicado junto con Cherríe Moraga, es una obra fundamental para la genealogía de las luchas y representaciones de las mujeres de color en los EE.UU. que conceptualiza lo queer de manera interseccional mucho antes de que se convirtiera en un tema de investigación universitaria.
