How are rivers born?
The children’s workshop is based on a Wixáratari narration that seeks to answer this question. For this indigenous community, which lives in Northern Mexico, rivers and wolves have an ancestral bond. In the first part of the workshop, we will make costumes based on the characters of the story, which will then be used to make a playful interpretation. We will talk about the relationship that non-human subjects such as turtles, wolves, rivers and mountains have for the indigenous community. Through these activities, children will have a first contact with the indigenous spirituality of Abya Yala (America), which will be briefly explained. Additionally, a short documentary about the introduction of wolves in Yellowstone National Park will be shown, which clarifies how after the presence of wolves the flow of rivers increases and modifies the ecosystem.

Gloria Anzaldúa not only wrote poetry but also children’s books, such as Prietita and La Llorona, through which she wanted to share an idea of indigenous spirituality with children.

The workshop is part of the Nepantla Library within the framework of Wissen über Brücken – Conocimiento sobre puentes. Relating to Gloria E. Anzaldúa in Words, Vision and Context, a project by Verena Melgarejo Weinandt and District * School without a centre in cooperation with the Sonntagsbureau in the Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek Berlin and the publishing house Zaglossus. ¿Cómo nacen los ríos?
El taller infantil se basa en una narración Wixáratari que trata de responder esta pregunta. Para esta comunidad indígena, que vive en el norte de México, los ríos y los lobos tienen una relación ancestral. En una primera parte del taller se confeccionarán disfraces basados en los personajes de la narración, que luego se usarán para hacer una lúdica interpretación del relato. En el taller se hablará sobre la relación que tienen los sujetos no humanos como tortugas, lobos, ríos y montañas para la comunidad indígena. A través de esta actividades, les niñes tendrán un primer contacto con la espiritualidad indígena de Abya Yala (América), la cual se explicará brevemente. Adicionalmente, se mostrará un breve documental sobre la introducción de los lobos en el parque nacional de Yellowstone, que aclara como después de la presencia de los lobos el flujo de los ríos aumenta y modifica el ecosistema.

Gloria Anzaldúa no solo escribió poesía sino también cuentos infantiles, como Prietita y La Llorona, a través de los cuales quiso trasmitir una idea de la espiritualidad indígena a la niñez.

El evento tiene lugar en el marco de Wissen über Brücken – Conocimiento sobre puentes. Relacionándonos con Gloria E. Anzaldùa en Palabras, Visión y Contexto. Este proyecto de traducción junto con una serie de eventos es organizado y curado por Verena Melgarejo Weinandt y District * Schule ohne Zentrum y se lleva a cabo en cooperación con el Sonntagsbureau de la Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek Berlin y la Editorial Zaglossus.
